Founded by the visionary Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875 as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, AMU attained university status in 1920. Today, it stands as one of India's most respected central universities.
Our History & Mission
Aligarh Muslim University was established with the mission to provide modern education to the masses while preserving cultural values. Sir Syed's vision was to create an institution that would bridge the gap between traditional learning and contemporary scientific thought. Over the decades, AMU has produced distinguished alumni who have excelled in various fields including science, politics, literature, and public service.
The university sprawls over a 467.6-hectare campus in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, featuring a blend of Mughal and Gothic architectural styles. It operates as a residential university with a diverse student body from all Indian states and several foreign countries.
